| Victorian style in Studio #539 |
My studio is located on the Venetian Courtyard of Chicago's historic Fine Arts Building. Originally built in 1885 as the showroom
and manufacturing plant of Studebaker wagons, in 1898 the Fine Arts Building was converted into studio space, housing artists
and musicians. Since that time it has always been associated with art and architecture, housing tenants such as Frank Lloyd
Wright, cartoonist John McCutcheon, sculptor Lorado Taft, and L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Anyone entering the building feels a direct link to the artists of Chicago's early 20th century from the moment they enter,
confronted with the words "All Passes - Art Alone Endures." The artists who inspired that phrase left something
more than words behind; their spirit can still be felt in the largely unchanged halls and studios of the building.
Visit the Alice McMahon White Studio at the Fine Arts Building, 410 S. Michigan Avenue, Suite #539. Hours by appointment.
